As the world gets smaller, it might surprise many that in 2017 a 27-year-old from Polokwane became the first African-born player to appear in Major League Baseball.

Gift Ngoepe, who plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates, made his debut against the Chicago Cubs to achieve this feat.

Before the game, Ngoepe said he’d been dreaming of this moment since he was a 10-year-old boy.

Ngoepe has joined an ever-growing list of South Africans making a name for themselves on the global stage, and hopefully opens the door for many more African-born baseball players.
